Lenovo is recalling a further 188,000 of its ThinkCentre PCs due to a possible fire risk. The M70z and M90z all-in-ones come with a faulty component in its embedded power supply that has already seen two units self-immolate. The company recommends that you check the serial number (via our source link) stamped on the base of the housing, let Lenovo know, unplug the unit and wait for a replacement.

Sony’s announced its first two LTE-capable phones for its Japanese customers — and there’s two of ‘em. The Xperia GX is up first, with a 720p 4.6-inch display squeezed in alongside a new 13-megapixel camera — a first for Sony’s mobile family, and presumably its new CMOS sensor. A 1.5 GHz dual-core processor ensures it should all tick along nicely, while the hardware design follows the curves of last year’s Xperia Arc, this time with a matte finish. The camera upgrade and huge screen makes a good case for this to be Sony’s new flagship device — mere months since the Xperia S debuted in Europe — and before the Xperia Ion has even had chance to launch in the US.
It’s joined by the Xperia XS, which Sony claims is the world’s lightest LTE capable handset, weighing in at just under 100g. It packs a smaller 3.7-inch screen with the same Mobile Bravia engine found on its bigger brother — and the rest of Sony’s recent handsets. It’s joined by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (although there’s no specifics on what type just yet), a more standard 8-megapixel camera and it wouldn’t be a Japanese phone without infrared connectivity, mobile wallet and a mobile TV — they’re all built-in. Both phones will launch in black and white, and Android fans can rest easy, as they’ll both arrive with Android 4.0 installed when they hit stores in Japan this summer.
[Thanks Thorzten]

Coming next month from Jabra, you’ll find the Supreme UC Bluetooth headset in its arsenal. In addition to featuring dual microphones for noise cancellation that’ll benefit your friends, it also leverages a sizable 24mm speaker to incorporate noise cancellation on your end, too. As you’d hope, the Supreme UC is quite lightweight, and the microphone can even be folded to conserve space. We’re told that its battery will give users up to six hours of talk time and between eight to fifteen hours of standby. The downside? It’ll set you back $149. Then again, for those who care about the audio quality of their calls, it could be money well spent.

The Nest Learning Thermostat just became a lot more available — that is, if you happen to be around one of the 500+ Lowe’s stores in the US that now carry the smart appliance. Lowe’s insists that the product, designed by former Apple employees, is in line with the chain’s do-it-yourself focus, seeing as home most buyers will likely install the product on their own. And everyone could stand to shed a some cost from their energy bills, right? More info can be found in the press release after the break.

Android-supporting smartphone makers have vowed to make fewer but more distinctive devices in an effort to compete in a market that already offers business users and consumers many different options. Increasing numbers of smartphones, in increasing sizes& not to mention names that echo or build on earlier models& can make the options seem a blur of deep-black displays, curving design work and multicore processors. How can a user differentiate? Which is the right smartphone to get? Here, eWEEK brought together three newer Android phones, each running 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and capable of running on a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network. While each has features that bring the others to mind, these smartphones also have details that set them apart. The HTC One X went on sale on the AT&T network May 6 for $199. The Samsung Galaxy S III was introduced May 3 and will arrive in the United States this summer, though carrier news and pricing are still unknown. And from the CTIA Wireless show in New Orleans, which started May 7, Verizon introduced the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE, which will arrive in "the coming weeks" at a price that’s yet to be determined. Are these phones distinct enough? Would a user switch networks for one? Alternately, could a $50 price tag, or possibly a waning interest in Android, get you to consider the Samsung Focus 2? Running Microsoft Windows Mobile 7.5, it was also introduced May 7. – …

Remember that line-up of colorful consoles we eyed back at TGS? One of eight of those mock-ups is about to become a reality, at least in Japan. We’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?
Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.
It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

The Motorola Droid 3 has a large system update queued and ready to roll out, but it's just another version of Gingerbread. The 5.7.905.XT862 update checks in about 230 MB, and is chock full of fixes, patches, and enhancements — all very welcome for most any user. With "only" 512 MB of RAM, we didn't really expect the Droid 3 to ever officially run Ice Cream Sandwich, but there's always that glimmer of hope when we see the system update prompt. What did get fixed and updated? I'm glad you asked.

Wonga.com, the successful but controversial payday loans provider, is extending its credit service to small businesses in the UK. The move is a smart one given the current economic climate. Banks have been lambasted for not lending to small businesses – Wonga is simply going to try and fill in the gap – and take advantage. Needless to say this could end up being a huge business for Wonga. Despite attracting the ire of financial journalists – including the Daily Telegraph, which prevented it from winning its Startup 100 awards – Wonga has made as many as 4 million short-term loans to consumers since its launch in 2007.

A University of Dundee scholar has been working on a wonderful tool that aims to evoke the emotional connection between children with autism and their parents. While we’ve seen novelties like the My Keepon in the past, any addition to the cause is always a pleasant one, and the Passive Play’s no exception. The concept comes in the form of an interactive toy cube for the kid (pictured above), which pairs up with an iOS app and allows the parent to see any interaction the little one is having with the device. Passive Play’s creator, Tom Kirkman, says his inspiration comes from “wanting to learn more about autism,” and in case you happen to be in the UK, he’ll be showing off the project at Dundee University later this month. For all those details, be sure to check out the PR after the break.

If you enjoyed all those not-at-all tiresome “May the 4th be with you” tweets yesterday, then this is likely right up your equatorial trench. Wicked Lasers, makers of the eye-meltingly powerful S3 Krypton laser has developed a $100 attachment for the same that will bring a few not-so-little boys’ dreams true. The ahem LaserSaber add-on takes the pin-sharp beam of light from the company’s S3 range of lasers, and sends it down a 32″ polycarbonate “blade”. A so called magnetic gravity system imitates the powering-up and down of those other famous sabers, but they stopped at adding sound effects. Bear in mind, you’re still dealing with imperial levels of light here, so dueling is most definitely not recommended, but if you want the nearest thing to the real deal, remember, May the 5th we told you.
